How to Solve a Cryptogram

A cryptogram is a famous quote where every letter has been replaced by a different letter of the alphabet — consistently throughout the puzzle. If the letter Q represents T in one place, it represents T everywhere. Your job is to figure out the substitution pattern using logic and letter recognition.

Start with short words. A single letter is almost always A or I. Two-letter words are likely IS, IT, IN, AT, or TO. These give you confirmed letters that appear throughout the rest of the puzzle.

Use apostrophes. The pattern X’T is almost always N’T. X’S is usually a possessive or a contraction of IS. These lock in high-value letters early.

Build momentum.Every letter you decode reveals new partial words. The second half of a cryptogram typically goes much faster than the first — you’re building compound momentum with every correct guess.
