Medium Cryptogram Puzzles
Medium cryptograms are the sweet spot — long enough to be genuinely engaging, short enough to finish in a single sitting. They draw from a wide range of famous quotes across all 16 categories, and they're calibrated for solvers who have a feel for the basics but still want a puzzle that pushes back a little.
A medium puzzle typically runs 55 to 85 letters and uses vocabulary that mixes common and less common words. You'll usually find one or two short anchor words early — a two or three-letter word that gives you your first confirmed letters — and then work outward from there. The middle section of a medium puzzle often has a satisfying inflection point where enough letters are confirmed that the remaining words start to resolve quickly, almost in a cascade.
How to Approach Medium Puzzles
Medium puzzles reward a structured approach. Start by identifying all the one and two-letter words and testing your best guesses. Then look for apostrophes — patterns like X'T are almost always N'T, and X'S is a possessive or contraction. Once you have five or six confirmed letters, scan the entire puzzle for partially decoded words and focus on whichever one has the fewest unknowns. Common three-letter words like THE, AND, BUT, and NOT appear frequently and can unlock several letters at once.
