About William Baziotes

William Baziotes was an American abstract expressionist painter renowned for his mysterious, biomorphic compositions that evoked underwater and dreamlike worlds. Born in 1912, he became famous for blending surrealist influences with abstract expressionism, creating works filled with organic shapes and ethereal atmospheres. Baziotes believed that art should emerge from the subconscious and intuition rather than rational planning, famously stating that "You paint with your mind, not with your hands." His haunting, contemplative works influenced generations of abstract artists before his death in 1963.
