About Maximilien Robespierre
Maximilien Robespierre was a French revolutionary leader and politician who became infamous for his role during the Reign of Terror, when thousands were executed by guillotine. A passionate advocate for virtue and democracy, he famously declared that terror was justice and promoted the execution of King Louis XVI. Though celebrated as an idealist who fought for the poor, his authoritarian methods and paranoia ultimately led to his own execution in 1794, ending the bloodiest phase of the French Revolution.
Did you know? Robespierre himself was eventually arrested by members of the National Convention and was guillotined in July 1794, meeting the same fate as many of his victims.
