Sophocles was an ancient Greek playwright who lived from 496 to 406 BCE and is celebrated as one of the greatest tragedians of all time. He wrote over 120 plays, of which only seven survive today, including masterpieces like Oedipus Rex and Antigone that explore fate and human nature. Known for his psychological depth and moral complexity, Sophocles famously said that mortals cannot escape their destiny, a theme woven throughout his works that continues to influence literature and philosophy.
