About Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer whose 1492 voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, sponsored by Spain, fundamentally changed European understanding of world geography. He is famous for his determination to find a western route to Asia, famously declaring he could reach the Indies by sailing west. Though he never reached Asia and indigenous peoples already inhabited the Americas, Columbus's expedition initiated sustained European exploration and colonization of the Western Hemisphere, making him one of history's most influential yet controversial figures.
